Yumi's first Book KOROSU – IO UCCIDO コロス I KILL
There are many crime stories that remain indelibly written in the collective memory, seemingly ordinary events that reveal family relationships, hidden crimes and perpetrated violence.
Since the early nineties, YUMI KARASUMARU has been superimposing her subjective identity and creative vision onto the memory of deep traumas and unbearable lacerations which are reflected in the surprisingly high incidence of suicides and murders in her home country, Japan.
Her paintings stem from photographs of alternating urban visions of Tokyo and family portraits or meeting teenagers on the streets of neighbourhoods like Shibuya, Harajuku and Ginza. The use of soft, artificial colours, that simulate the effect of digital images, creates a short circuit in relation to the drama of each of the subjects represented.
KOROSU – IO UCCIDO コロス I KILL is Yumi Karasumaru's first book and it collects the texts of twenty years of her performances.
In this volume, written in three languages (Italian, English and Japanese),a thin red line connects the atomic bomb with the progressive loss of generational identities, affected by the fire of consumption that is destroying the historical and individual traditions of Japan.
Korosu is a book of stories that evoke images and the images imply stories. A sleek, contemporary view of the crimes of our society: from Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the nerve gas threat in Tokyo, to the globalisation that Japan and all the other economic powers of the West have undertaken. A highly innovative publishing project, that reads like a book of short stories, and opens like a catalogue of an exhibition, complemented by a large colour section with the most representative works by the Japanese artist.
